The Cully Park 5th Birthday Party was a success!

In 2000, The City of Portland Parks and Recreation acquired a 25‐acre landfill in Northeast Portland’s Cully Neighborhood. Cully is Northeast Portland's largest neighborhood, covering over 3 square miles and housing a population of 15,000. This vibrant neighborhood stands out for its racial and ethnic diversity, one of Oregon's most diverse Census tracts. Most of Cully is characterized by single-family dwellings, with only two specific zones permitting commercial activities: one along the western boundary at N.E. 42nd Ave. and the other along the central artery, Cully Blvd. Additionally, the northern edge of the neighborhood, situated between N.E. Portland Highway and Columbia Blvd., is predominantly an industrial area.
In contrast to the rapidly developing inner neighborhoods in Portland that host a variety of amenities like parks, open spaces, bike lanes, and neighborhood services, Cully had no community green spaces. Recognizing the need for a community green space in Cully, Verde launched the ¡Let Us Build Cully Park! campaign, collaborating with Portland Parks to form a public‐private partnership for the development of Cully Park. Verde collaborated with various community organizations, including the Living Cully coalition, and began fundraising efforts to create a communal green space for the neighborhood.
In 2010, Verde commenced the Cully Park project. With the partnership's approval in 2012, fundraising was initiated to construct a range of amenities, including a community garden, new access via NE 72nd Greenstreet, an off‐leash dog area, a parking lot, a play area, trails, an overlook, habitat restoration, picnic areas, youth soccer field, and the Native Gathering Garden.
Through their hard work and dedication, the coalition successfully raised 14 million dollars, transforming the 25-acre landfill into what is now Cully Park. The project actively engaged thousands of residents in the design and construction process, with 70% of the participating contractors being minority and women-owned.
On July st, 2018, Cully Park opened its doors to the public, making a lasting impact on the community. Beyond creating job opportunities for local BIPOC and women contractors, it played a vital role in developing essential green infrastructure to address the negative environmental effects of the landfill. Cully Park now stands as a much-needed green space, providing the community with a space where families and friends can gather.

On July 1st, we celebrated Cully Park's 5th birthday with a remarkable turnout, thanks to our incredible community members who attended and participated! The event wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of all who made the event possible. We were elated to welcome an estimated 600 attendees and provide over 200 free meals to the community. Additionally, we hosted 14 community booths, offering educational resources, knowledge, and entertainment for everyone.
The celebration included live performances, a piñata, and delicious cake, making it a joyful event for all. We extend our deepest gratitude to our volunteers, staff, and all who attended, as their collective efforts contributed to the tremendous success of the event.
The Cully Park Birthday Party was not only a celebration of the park's fifth year but also a joyous celebration of community. Cully Park is more than just a park; it is a gathering space that has brought people together, creating a sense of belonging and unity within the neighborhood. Moreover, the birthday celebration showcased the power of collaboration and collective action. It was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the community members, volunteers, and staff who came together to make the event a success. Through their combined efforts, the event not only highlighted the park's achievements but also showcased the spirit of unity and determination that drives positive transformations in the neighborhood.

En el año 2000, el Departamento de Parques y Recreación de la Ciudad de Portland adquirió un vertedero de 25 acres en el vecindario de Cully en el noreste de Portland.
